In Contention - Art Direction

So here I am back again with some more predictions - this time I am doing Art Direction (or Production Designing.

Important things first, Art Direction, for those who don't know, or want to know, or don't want to know (whatever), it refers to artistic designing and creation of film sets and its decoration, often the overall visual appearance of the film. Art Direction is usually not just limited to set designing but infact it influences almost everything you see in the film - ranging from props, to benches to ceilings to curtains. Several films have amazing art direction like Gone with the Wind or recently like Moulin Rouge! or Avatar.

This year we have basically two front runners - and the winner is going to be either one of them. Check 'em out- (Asterisk symbol means a nomination from both ADG and BAFTA long list)
  1.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 -  Stuart Craig - Deathly Hallows Part 2 ofcourse utilizes several set pieces from previous Potter films, but since none of them are recognized by the Academy (Potter films are nominated thrice for Art Direction Oscar), Mr. Craig and his team have huge "over due" tag on them. Also, some newer sets like Gringott's underground vaults and some more Hogwarts extensions are just awesome - they alone deserve some recognition. Fingers crossed.
  2. Hugo - Dante Ferretti - So this is the film sweeping almost every art direction award this year. Dante's work is outstanding - the intricate design of automations, the wonderful, whimsical feel of 1920's or so Paris, jaw dropping work on train station is something genius. If not Potter, it is him.
  3. Tinkor Taylor Soldier Spy - Maria Djurkovic - This British spy drama is set in cold war - and the sets by Maria perfectly capture the bleak atmosphere. As I said previously it is between Potter or Hugo, but Tinkor Taylor... may surprise us.
 Other potential nominees are-
  • 4. War Horse
  • 5. The Artist
  • 6. The Tree of Life
These are unlikely to get a nomination, but you never know -
  • 7. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
  • 8. Drive
  • 9. Anonymous
  • 10. The Help
